pending months in search of the perfect place to retire, Leanna and Lewis Everett discovered the unspoiled beauty of Hutchinson Island, a barrier island nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River in Stuart, Fla. Their quest led them to build a home in Sailfish Point, an oceanside community interlaced with waterways and cooled by refreshing sea breezes.

To begin, the couple called on architect Manuel Angles to create a clean-lined interpretation of Mediterranean design — a fresh approach that would incorporate the timeless elegance of the motif as well.

"We wanted a bit of an Old World look," Leanna says. "Our home in Virginia was very traditional. This was our first Mediterranean project, and we told Manny we didn't want anything overdone or any bizarre colors. We wanted the house to take advantage of its waterfront location."
