"The owners wanted a ceiling based on European treatments, particularly those found in French chateaux in the 17th and 18th centuries," Prelogar says. "Their research uncovered a stunning example in a photograph that we were able to duplicate."

For the home's primary color scheme, the owners requested a Renaissance palette inspired by the paintings of Raphael and Titian. Such coloration comes to life in the ruby red-and-gold area rug and runner in the palatial foyer.

In the living room, red, gold and other jewel tones impart an air of regal elegance. Twin sofas upholstered in striped silk pair with tapestry-covered armchairs in front of a marble fireplace. Like the fireplace, the wood flooring and ceiling are original to the house.

A striking blue and gold palette, reminiscent of The White House Blue Room, defines the library. "The real muse for this space was the sapphire-blue drapery fabric," Swinney says. Once a music/sitting room, the space lacked the requisite bookshelves, so Prelogar and Swinney designed cherry-wood cabinetry with ebony and gold-leaf accents. continued...
