For the upstairs media room, the Cornells opted for a friendlier seating arrangement instead of theater-style seating. “Judy preferred something more conducive to conversation and entertaining,” Smith says, “so we placed an oversized leather sofa with deep-cushioned swivel chairs.”

The library, located downstairs, also doubles as the Cornells’ home office. Here, deep brick red walls and dark-stained maple cabinetry set the room’s studious tone. Smith designed the Gothic-inspired gas fireplace.

Livelier in mood, the kitchen captures the rustic feel of a Provençal kitchen with its warm wood cabinetry and Mexican tiles. The island with a honed-marble countertop was built to look and feel “like a piece of furniture,” Smith says.

The azure skies of the Mediterranean inspired the use of blue in the nearby breakfast room, while the sunlit French countryside led the designers to choose a dijon hue for the master suite walls. Accent colors in the master suite were plucked from the front panels of an antique Austrian armoire. The canopy bed features a hand-painted wood finish that resembles the armoire’s.

Blanketed in white, the master bath evokes an Old World feel with its architectural details.

Drawing from the ageless character and sunfilled aura of the French countryside, Smith and Earnest created an interior reflective of their clients’ refined taste and gracious lifestyle.
