IN
THIS ISSUE Florida
is rich in art and architecture, thanks in part to
numerous historical figures who have left us lasting
legacies. Luminaries such as Henry Flagler and Addison
Mizner immediately come to mind, as well as Circus
King John Ringling and his wife, Mable, who
entrusted their art collection and winter estate in
Sarasota to the state of Florida.
A recent trip to Sarasota afforded the perfect opportunity
to visit the Ringlings Venetian-style mansion,
Cà dZan, which was completed in 1926.
Now restored to its original grandeur, the estate
and grounds reflect the opulence of a bygone era.
Located off the coast of Miami is secluded Fisher
Island, the original site of William K. and Rosamund
Vanderbilts 1920s winter estate. The worldly
refinement of that era still prevails, as evidenced
by the harmonious blend of European and Asian influences
in a new home designed by Ted Fine, Brett Sugerman
and Giselle Landi.
In Boca Raton, many homes bear the stamp of Mizners
genious, including one that Mac McGuinness refurbished
for his client. Previous additions to the original
Mizner house had nearly doubled its size, leaving
him the task of authentically restoring the original
section and imbuing the newer areas with the same
patina of age.
The Mediterranean elements that characterized Mizners
work also distinguish designer Lusia Shafran and husband
Arts villa in Naples, Fla. Enamored with Italys
Tuscan region, she takes a lighter approach to Old
World style, achieving a simple yet sophisticated
look.
Gracing the cover of this issue is the loggia of a
home designed by Judy Howard. Choosing a soft island
palette for the interior, she created a formal yet
welcoming ambiance that captures the essence of the
tropics and Florida living.
