ABOVE: James Coignard’s wing-like glass sculpture draws the eye toward
the hallway off the Great Room. Across from it is Alberto Gambale’s sculpture, which the owners affectionately call “Blue Man.” The butterfly painting is
by Warhol.

Impressed with its location and amenities, the
couple bought two adjacent penthouses with the intention of combining them into a single residence. In addition, the couple wanted a gallerylike space to showcase their important collection of paintings, sculptures and art glass, which they have amassed over the years.
A recommendation from the architect who had
designed the building led them to interior designer Beatrice Pila-Gonzalez. “Right from the beginning, it was a wonderful meeting of the minds,” the wife says. “Bea made the process so enjoyable.”
Pila-Gonzalez handled both the interior construction and design, devising a free-flowing floor plan to accommodate the owners’ art and lifestyle.

“The opportunity to do a project from its inception is always a designer’s dream,” Pila-Gonzalez says.
Surrounded by vistas of sky and water, the 2,000- square-foot Great Room displays works by such renowned artists as Andy Warhol, Dale Chihuly, Alberto Gambale, James Coignard and more.
Bursting with color, the artwork pops against
cream-colored Venetian-plaster walls.
Comprising two conversation areas, the Great
Room combines Italian modern furniture and
antiques. References to Art Deco style pepper the contemporary setting. “The wife was involved in selecting all the furnishings,”
Pila-Gonzalez says. “We enjoyed finding
one-of-a-kind pieces together.”
