In the foyer, designer Martha Puente installed special lighting to illuminate artwork by Japanese-American artist Kerry Echo. The paintings flank a Spanish Baroque vargueño, or “portable chest,” which rests on a console.

And I wanted a design that was appropriate for Key Biscayne, but at the same time have a little flair. I was thinking of a Bermuda/Palm Beach style.”
So, Puente began by redesigning the floor plan around her client’s eclectic collection of antiques, reproductions and contemporary pieces. To create harmony within the design, she opted for a neutral palette and upholstered the furniture in complementary fabrics.

“We tried to merge all the pieces,” she says. “We planned the space using the dimensions of his furniture, then did a ceiling plan for the indirect lighting throughout, as well as the lighting for the art.”
Puente’s floor plan also takes into consideration Pérez-de Cobos’ entertaining needs and request for a clear delineation between the home’s public and private areas. The foyer, for instance, establishes specific boundaries, yet beckons guests inside.
