Giati umbrellas shade McGuire chaises from the sun on either side of the Olympic-sized pool. Positioned to maximize the view, sliding glass doors shelter the patio from ocean breezes.

Homes are not meant to be preserved throughout time; rather, they should adapt to the character and lifestyle of those who live in them. So reasoned interior designer Tui Pranich when he was commissioned to renovate this 24,000-square-foot vacation home on five acres of oceanfront property in Palm Beach, originally designed by the legendary Albert Hadley.

“Well-meaning friends said to the owners, ‘How can you change it? It’s Albert Hadley,’ ” Pranich says. “But it was also classic Palm Beach style, and my clients did not want that typical Palm Beach feel. They wanted a fresh, young look.” Given the home’s design origin and its history as part of the Phipps estate — evidenced in the entry and gardens’ architectural features and landscaping — Pranich had to plan carefully in order to stay true to the home’s prestigious past.
