"The wife wanted a bright work space,” interior designer Tui Pranich says of the office. Pranich delivered, with an Edward Fields area rug, Larsen’s pale-yellow draperies and Conrad shades that frame a view of the gardens.

The designer also took into account the demands for seating and socializing, as the owners’ active season schedule calls for hosting charitable events and receptions for the likes of former President Bill Clinton, First Lady Laura Bush and John Kerry. “The wife entertains a lot and has had several presidents and presidential candidates visit her home,” Pranich says.

Such distinguished visitors demand important design, beginning with a mix of English, French and contemporary furnishings in the office. Because the wife uses the office extensively for fund-raising and planning events, it was paramount that the room look and feel comfortable. “Comfort was most important,” Pranich says. “It had to be inviting for guests.” Existing mahogany paneling and a Macassar ebony cocktail table contrast the light fabrics and add exquisite character.
