IN THIS ISSUE

New traditional is the luxury designer’s fresh style trend that reveals itself in this issue of Florida Design. Most of us appreciate the time-honored and familiar, but as today’s trend setters know, straight-up traditional seasoned with a dash of élan evokes verve. Like a formal table set with mix-&-match wine glasses, traditional designs need an infusion of avant garde to bring them to life.

Reflecting the talents of designer Judy Howard, the 21st-century edited traditional style of a South Palm Beach home cuts an imposing figure with strong horizontal lines, graceful curved arches and bold geometric shapes. Full-bodied dark wood trim and furnishings serve as the ideal foil for a cool pale blue palette that strikes a perfect chord between classic and chic.

Inside a Sunny Isles Beach condominium, designer Deborah Wecselman outfitted the space with the same “classic meets contemporary” theme. While unique vintage pieces say traditional, voluptuous, overscaled furnishings bring the design into the present. Accent materials abound with striped fabrics, zebrawood-wrapped walls and trendy shades of mandarin to update the scheme even more.

A mélange of furnishings and artwork collected from markets and auctions throughout the world shape the decor of designer Sabrina Balsky and her husband, architect Peter Mason’s Aventura home. Hints of familiar elements from the past mix with a profusion of color to create a whimsical interior grounded in tradition.

Where to find the objets d’art? Florida Design travels to England touring the Shoppes of London to offer a glimpse of everything from vintage antiquities to modern masterpieces.
