Living in Florida definitely has its advantages: beautiful weather, light-blue skies and breathtaking waterfront views. Reaping the benefits of the state’s fortunate features, the following designers blend the natural setting of the homes’ surrounding environments into their interiors.

On the cover, interior designer Mark Christofi brings the beauty of Bali to a West Florida barrier island in this sprawling tropical retreat that captures the sultry splendor of its Indonesian-like setting. Incorporating a subdued color scheme along with natural materials, Christofi intertwines the interiors with the calming backdrop of the surrounding landscape and lets the exterior be the home’s primary aesthetic.

Capturing the views of the St. Lucie Inlet, interior designer Kerry Allabastro and architect Stuart Brenner fused the indoors and out in a 6,300-square-foot home on Hutchinson Island. By placing the main living areas at the back, adding floor-to-ceiling French doors and windows, and incorporating tropical patterns, mahogany furnishings, and coral and green hues, the pair created a feel of island-style living.

A 4,500-square-foot modern home in Winter Park, Fla., by builder and residential designer Phil Kean, and designer Rob Turner, proves that you don’t need the water-filled tropics to mesh interiors with the exterior. Kean emphasized the terrain, creating several levels and staggering the front façade as the topography sloped. Wrap-around windows nested into the walls allow views to the outdoors, while the organic textures of the outside reappear inside.

Blurring boundaries between inside and out, these designers show that incorporating the natural setting of Florida is a key ingredient to a great design.
