Interior designer Kerry Allabastro was more than twice blessed with her empty-nester clients. For nearly ten years, the couple had retained her successively for renovations of both their Florida and North Carolina homes, then commissioning her for their most exciting project of all — this custom waterfront home located on a lush, landscaped site in the Sailfish Point community on Florida’s Hutchinson Island.

Gearing the house for comfortable island-style living, architect Stuart Brenner developed the design of the couple’s 6,300-square-foot, British Colonial home, resplendent with floor-to-ceiling French doors and windows. Brenner also strategically placed all the main living spaces at the back of the house to take advantage of the stunning St. Lucie Inlet views, creating a perfect fusion of indoors and out.

“Being a native Floridian, I grew up with Oriental rugs and mahogany furniture,
and always felt that it was good to incorporate those pieces with color,” the wife says.

As in the past, Allabastro worked hand-in-hand on the interiors with the wife. “She wanted bright colors inspired by the tropical environment,” the designer says. Thus, the interior design concept reflects the tropics through a subtle palette of soft hues with strong punches of bright coral. Finely crafted millwork adds to the effect, which is at once elegant and comfortable.

Traditional design reminiscent of an authentic Caribbean island home graces the interiors. The foyer introduces this style with gleaming cherry wood flooring, which echoes throughout the social spaces. Buttercup-yellow walls follow from the foyer into the living room, which is punctuated by a wall of French doors topped with clerestories. With a color scheme inspired by the surrounding tropical ambiance, the living room comprises a sofa and lounge chairs in a subdued floral pattern. Accent pillows on the sofa inject a splash of coral color.

French doors continue in the dining room, capturing the outdoor views. The room imbues formality through elaborate window treatments and custom-designed Osborne & Little wall covering softly illuminated by Maitland-Smith table lamps. Classic mahogany furnishings from the owners’ collection complete the look.

In contrast, the family room sports a more casual feel with a comfortable apple-green sofa that complements a custom-designed window treatment in a green-and-white checked fabric. The fabric repeats in the nearby breakfast room in the form of Austrian curtains. Framed by conservatory-like walls of glass, this sunny space is the consummate Florida room. “This room was such an important space for the owners because it is where they enjoy most of their meals,” Brenner says. “By wrapping the room in glass and giving it a prime location, the result is a feeling of dining al fresco.”

Both the husband and wife are Florida natives who have built and lived in numerous homes together, and were intrinsically involved in the planning of this home. Asked about the island living experience, the husband says, “For me, it’s the ultimate. You keep trying to move up as you go through life and eventually you reach a place where you say I can stay here for the rest of my life.”
