What happens when you get several design and architecturally savvy guys together? If they are residential designer and builder Phil Kean, designer Rob Turner, and the ghosts of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van Der Rohe — the answer is a magically modern home where the walls have no limits.

The exclusive neighborhood of historic Winter Park, Fla., known as “The Vias” is distinguished for its winding streets named after Italian regions — Via Tuscany and Via Lombardy. But more importantly, it’s known for the wide variety of architectural styles found there, where a Spanish Mediterranean on a grand scale may sit next to a Florida ranch-style or a mid-century cottage.

But when Kean, an MBA and MArch from Harvard and Washington University, decided to design and build a house on Via Tuscany, he wanted to tap into what had inspired the Florida builders of the fifties — the verdant and breezy outdoors — where the textures and organic beauty of nature could transcend walls. “I wanted a modern-style house, but one that was warm — not the standard white-box contemporary,” Kean says.

In keeping with the philosophy of Frank Lloyd Wright that emphasized building into the terrain and the natural setting, Kean sketched out a 4,500-square-foot plan that dropped the interior of the house onto several levels, staggered the front facade’s horizontal planes as the topography sloped, and allowed windows to be nested into walls to yield the appearance of what Mies Van Der Rohe called “a fear of glass.” And it all fits perfectly into the neighborhood.

“Rob and I understood each other completely,” says Kean, who has since completed six or seven other projects with the designer. “Whatever was outside — colors, textures — would appear again inside. All boundaries are blurred.”

Step inside, where a grand piano to the right and a soaring sculptural, ipe, glass and stainless-steel stairwell to the left make way to the living room circled in a wash of light. When the sun goes down, the three suspended globes in the elevated foyer, the recessed lights that illuminate the pewter-colored drapes and hidden lighting in the elongated celerestory ports flood the house with magical shadows.

The home, which also contains an office, a gym and a theatre, as well as the massage room,
steam bath and seven bathrooms, was meant to have the feeling of a getaway.
“It’s the place you’d go on weekends, but can now just come home to,” Kean says.

Beyond, Turner has placed four beige-and-cream, tone-on-tone chairs around a Platner stainless-steel cocktail table fom Knoll in a comfortable conversation area. From here, the design flows seamlessly to the nine-foot-long, Turner-designed cherry-wood table and its white, Italian leather-covered chairs in the nearby dining area.

“Just as I wanted the outside to flow inside, I also wanted each room to offer a tempting glimpse into the next,” Kean says. The eyes travel from the kitchen’s tightly patterned, granite breakfast island to tropical fish happily cavorting in a 450-gallon, four-sided tank, and beyond to the family room. The column holding the double microwaves in the kitchen on one side houses an HD television in the family room on the other side. And sweeping along both rooms, the expanse of a totally open pool terrace allows air to circulate throughout.

Unlike some homes where the master suite is positioned up and away from the action, Kean wanted proximity to the pool, its spa and the cascading waterfall that tumbles gently down the quartz expanse outside. The fireplace faces the bed, while a classic-modern Le Corbusier chaise addresses poolside.

And what could be nicer after a swim than a massage? Connected by a breezeway, the master bath leads to a massage room/gym and a steam room, each space overlooking the hot tub and shimmering pool.

Kean looks back on the project that amazingly spanned only seven months from start to finish. “The designer had a challenge,” Kean says. “I’m pretty strong-willed; but we both kept our vision … mine was a serene spa-feel, Rob’s was an upscale boutique hotel. In the end, I think the blend is perfect.”
