"YOU DON’T NOTICE AT FIRST, BUT DESIGNER JAY BRITTO’S soft Latin r’s may explain one of the many reasons why his collaboration with clients Manolo and Julia Rodriguez was so successful. In fact, if Peruvian-born Britto weren’t communicating in Spanish, he couldn’t speak to them at all. “They come from Alicante, Spain, and fell in love with Aventura,” Britto says. “Living so close to Miami makes them feel very much at home.” And while the Rodriguez’ primary estate, which used to belong to Alfonso XIII, former king of Spain, exudes a more traditional feel, the owners desired a departure for their new, South Florida winter retreat — a style that was clean, modern and timeless.

With 200 linear feet of terrace space, this 29th-floor penthouse overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. Inside, Britto utilized the color white and all its possibilities, incorporating splashes of orange — his signature hue — a color that he says “evokes a kind of Latin note, as well as pure joy.” Paneled walls, and recessed and stepped ceilings create unexpected touches at every turn. “My basic palette is restrained, but patterns, textures and architectural elements of surprise keep you interested,” Britto says.

Upon entry, smooth panels of African Macassar ebony wood form herringbone patterns on the foyer walls and recessed ceiling to create a dramatic backdrop for the owners’ diverse art collection. Wood-paneled walls continue into the main areas, separating the dining and living rooms. Because the owners love to entertain, the dining room’s white lacquered table had to seat at least 10. Leather chairs set a more elegant tone in complementary contrast to the table’s chunky, stainless-steel legs, while the orange hues of a sculptural floor lamp designed by Ayala Serfaty and simple floral arrangements add a hint of spice.

Uniting the entire residence, smooth, white limestone flooring flows from the dining room into the living room, where soft, gauzy draperies utilize a panel-vision system that can either close completely for a filtered glow or pull into sections for a pillared effect. White leather sofas from Roche-Bobois arc for intimacy around dual cocktail tables of blue and white Murano glass. Water vistas continue into the family room, where a thick chocolate-brown shag area rug and an inviting modular sofa form a cozy arrangement.

In the nearby kitchen, eight, Macassar-backed barstools line the bar, where festive orange hues and a series of glass “milk bottle” pendants create a whimsical mood. Here, Britto installed a paellera well so that the Rodriguez family could slow cook traditional Spanish paella, their favorite seafood and rice dish, to perfection when entertaining.

Set apart from the public spaces, the long, art-filled gallery leads to the master bedroom and three guest rooms, each featuring two king-size beds to accommodate the owners’ large, extended family. Fascinated with ceiling details, Britto designed a stepped look in two of the guest rooms; one in hues of taupe, pewter and white, and the other in a honey caramel. Italiandesigned cabinetry spans the lengths of both rooms, which measure at approximately 30 feet long.

The master bedroom, a study in purist white, and its adjoining office, play with a slightly retro feel, but revel in an ethereal simplicity. Paintings of water, lush plants and a porthole-like window with a view of the sea bring in a natural, organic feel that is meant to relax and rejuvenate.

Designed with entertaining in mind, the owners desire for a classic, modern home was completely fulfilled by Britto — with over 4,800 square feet of sophisticated fun.
