"Anearly naked space in the new Palazzo del Mare condominium on Fisher Island became one interior designer’s dream. Pepe Calderin had redesigned the sales center for Fisher Island’s posh residential buildings and reaped an unexpected benefit — sales personnel recommended him to design the interiors of one of its grand-scale 8,000-square-foot apartments. To Calderin’s good fortune, the owners were a very “hip” young couple with impeccable taste. During the initial meeting, clients and designer agreed on a contemporary style punctuated with color and texture. To establish continuity from the beginning, Calderin introduced lustrous flooring of Calacata marble at the apartment’s private entry foyer.

A wenge-wood étagère stands tall, followed by an eye-catching, asymmetrically-patterned, red-glass wall treatment that serves as the prelude to the oceanview living room. Capped by a combination rectilinear and curvilinear cove ceiling, this expansive space utilizes seating textured with fabrics in subtle shades of caramel, taupe and brown. Adding to the “wow factor” is a pair of Frighetto lounge chairs coupled with a freeform B&B Italia chair, all in fire engine red.

The repetitive use of wenge wood for the square arches of the gallery contrasts
with the red glass wall and beckons visitors into the handsome dining room.

Calderin removed the original fireplace and replaced it with an inventive see-through hearth perched behind a wenge-wood base and framed by Calacata marble panels. The designer’s creative expression resonates through the custom-designed luminous, frosted-glass mantle lined with mirrored strips. And Calderin’s artistry continues in the area rug — or more accurately — a series of smaller rugs designed with flexible pieces that can be placed in any desired configuration.

Nearby, the gallery leads into the elegantly understated dining room with its banquet-sized D’Autore glass and steel table. The red-glass wall reappears center stage, this time flanked by two floor-to-ceiling windows — or so it seems. In fact, these virtual windows are simply wenge-wood slats in front of bronze glass backlit with LED lighting to give the impression of natural light.

“I learned from an architect,” says Calderin, referring to Richard Levine, the firm’s founding partner. “Striking architectural components imbue strength.” And in keeping with that mantra, Calderin preserved the upscale kitchen configuration. He stained the original Snaidero cabinetry to match wenge wood, then wrapped the countertops and backsplash in Calacata marble, and created a new soffit containing pit lights from Kreon. “Levine taught me that strong elements and ceilings are essential to a great design.”

In a departure that proved to be compatible to the kitchen, a stone wall was installed as the focal point of the adjacent family room. Adding further excitement, three green display shelves from Luminaire are seemingly imbedded in the stone. In contrast, a round wenge-wood table with a complexity of interlocking legs enjoys lighting from a captivating Verpan fixture comprised of stainless steel and bold red accents encased in an ethereal glass globe.

When it almost seems that there could be no more beauty to absorb, the master bedroom comes into play. Here, floating above the bed in perfect harmony, Peter Lik’s photographic art, “Fantail,” exudes a purposeful softness all over, exemplified by an oversized brown ottoman and the Danskina area rug.

Unparalled luxury resides in the master bath, where intricate blue mosaic tiles applied generously throughout add texture punctuated with color. A splendid glass shower with its abundant blue mosaic tiles reflects in the oversized whirlpool tub that mimics the drama of an infinity swimming pool, but with far more intimacy — the perfect spot for dreaming in quiet repose.

This was a dream job with a picture-perfect result. “I had the ideal clients,” Calderin says. “They never changed a thing from my original concept.”
