"Looking for a home with charming sense of peaceful relaxation coupled with quick access to South Florida’s lively Delray Beach area, homeowner Karin Bice found just such a treasure while boating on Lake Ida with her husband. “We saw a site and fell in love with it,” Bice says. “Not only was it on the water, and close to Delray Beach’s attractions and beautiful beaches, but it was a large piece of property. We felt this was where we could build our dream house.”

The couple immediately purchased the site and began to work with Bice’s brother, renowned interior designer Scott Graham, to plan the style of their new home. “We decided we wanted a modern home with a nod to Palms Springs and Frank Lloyd Wright’s style,” Bice says. “It also needed to be a livable space with an open floor plan. When I saw a picture of a house with stacked-stone pillars and a warm, modern interior, it formed the foundation for our home’s design.”

“We used horizontal soffits to bring in a feeling of volume,” architect randall stofft says.
“This and the use of large windows throughout keep the rooms open and airy.”

With a recommendation from the builder, Bice and Graham chose architect Randall Stofft to design the 5,200-square-foot home. Stofft understood exactly what they wanted and how to make it work with the natural flow of the property. “The site gently slopes down to the water, which gives a bit of a bluff for the house to sit on — something that is unusual in South Florida,” Stofft says. “We decided that using horizontal planes made of light stucco would help make the home feel light and airy, sit comfortably on the bluff and flow naturally with the grounds. We also used vertical elements, such as the stacked quartzite stone columns, to support the cantilevered roof structure and ground the house.”

Working with Bice and Graham, Stofft carried this theme through to the interior, using horizontal soffits to bring in a feeling of volume. The team also determined that the home’s stacked-stone pillars should continue inside as well and incorporated an open floor plan with interior tiers that step down and work with the property’s slant. Ceilings reaching heights of more than 13 feet and expansive windows increase the open, airy effect in complement to strategically placed wall space. “We added walls for art without closing in the floor plan,” Stofft says. “These helped instill warm and cozy elements.”

For the interior, Graham and Bice based the palette and furnishings on its contemporary architecture — and important focal points. “We picked out a few key pieces, such as the area rug in the living room, and worked around them,” Bice says. “We wanted to incorporate the look and feel of all the earth elements to create an environment that was peaceful, tranquil and warm.”

“We wanted to incorporate the look and feel of all the earth elements to create an
environment that was peaceful, tranquil and warm,” homeowner Karin Bice says.

To incorporate natural elements, Graham used a combination of African wood and terrazzo flooring throughout the main living areas. And, in addition to the copious natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows, he brought in plenty of recessed lighting. “Its streamlined look, warmth and subtlety add just the right combination,” Bice says.

A fusion of warmth and modernity, the home offers just the right combination for the owners as well, and the fact that it was designed by Bice’s brother makes it all the more special. “This is my forever house,” Bice says, “and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
