"Tucked Away in one of the most desireable neighborhoods of Winter Park, Fla., this stunning home stands in total harmony with its serene lakefront site. While so many other homes on Lake Osceola display the Mediterranean influence of famed architects Addison Mizner and James Gamble Rogers II, the owners of this custom-built masterpiece took a decidedly different approach, opting for a warm, contemporary feel that suits their sophisticated tastes and penchant for entertaining.

With specific focus on properties directly fronting one of Winter Park’s many lakes, the homeowners previewed this site and knew right away that it was perfect. Longtime friends and repeat clients of interior designers Sam Ewing and Gail Winn, the owners chose the esteemed designers yet again. “We knew we wanted Sam and Gail to lead our design team for this project,” the wife says. “They’re good friends who understand us and have been able to continually satisfy our design needs for 20-plus years.” After hiring architect Andrew Kirschner, and builders Jim Akers and Bud Brinker, a three-year project ensued with the homeowners playing a hands-on role. “We couldn’t have asked for better clients or a more satisfying collaboration,” Winn says.

Mirroring its exterior architectural style, the home’s interior scheme portrays a subtle, clean-lined aesthetic that calls focus to the spectacular setting and the owners’ exceptional art collection. Meticulous craftsmanship, articulated in a palette of stone, steel and mahogany, reigns throughout the sprawling 13,000-square-foot space, where low-slung, neutral-toned furnishings clad in lush, tactile fabrics add layers of texture, warmth, quality and comfort.

An interior color palette of sage, citron and taupe provides a soft backdrop that complements the outside landscape. With its focal-point view of Lake Osceola, the grand-proportioned living room features two conversation groupings and a bar area with Kirschner’s stepped window design as the highlight of the room. A pair of anigre-wood columns signifies the transition from living space to dining room. Here, two groupings enable the owners to equally accommodate large gatherings or intimate dinners. The rectangular mahogany table seats 10-12 guests while the smaller round table seats six to eight. A custom, woven-silk area rug provides continuity, as do coordinating fabrics on the dining chairs.

Jerusalem limestone flooring prevails throughout the main living areas and flows from the dining room to the family room, kitchen and breakfast area. Kitchen designer Joan DesCombes custom designed ebony-finished cabinetry that provides a stunning counterpart to the granite-covered backsplash, countertops and island. Displayed above the brushed-stainless-steel range hood by artist/designer Fu-Tung Cheng are clay pieces by Barbara Sorensen. In the nearby family room, a relaxed yet elegant arrangement faces the panoramic lakefront view. Glass doors open onto the covered loggia, enabling the space to be utilized as one, uninterrupted entertainment area.

“This house is like a fine piece of meticulously crafted furniture,” Ewing says. “It was a flawless team effort with owners who didn’t compromise on anything.” But the clients’ compliments are the real testimony to the project’s success. “This house is exactly as we wanted,” the wife says. “The design team took great pride in creating our dream home.”
