FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSETWhen Winter Weather proved unfavorable for designer Carol Groh and architect Donald Smith, they made the move from their home in Greenwich, Conn., to sunny South Florida. Here, the timeless, contemporary architecture of Trump Plaza featured just the right style that the couple preferred, and, after finding a pair of adjoining apartments in this luxury high-rise building, Groh and Smith turned both two-bedroom condos into a 4,200-square-foot home with views overlooking Palm Beach’s Intracoastal Waterway to the east and City Place to the west.

Being that this would be the couple’s primary home, with one also in New York, this tremendous remodeling project took them nearly two years to complete.

“The most delightful aspect of the home is the incredible views looking east to west with wraparound terraces for fabulous vistas from sunrise to sunset,” designer and homeowner Carol Groh says.

Deciding that hurricane shutters interfered with the natural light and scenic views, Groh and Smith installed new, floor-to-ceiling high-impact glass. A large column originally dividing the space between the living rooms was replaced with lacquered cabinetry, while two bedrooms were combined to create one large master suite.

With a primary palette of white, cream and beige, Groh incorporated splashes of blue inspired by the water and sky views, and fashioned a classic, contemporary theme that radiates with a timeless, cheerful appeal. Polished travertine flooring accented with lapis lazuli gemstones runs throughout, while natural materials reflect the clean, pure lines of the apartment’s casual simplicity. “One of our most important goals was to create a perfect backdrop for our extensive collection of art and artifacts from around the world,” Groh says. “We knew that the key was to keep it simple and light.”

Lapis lazuli gemstone repeats in the granite walls and surround of the master bath’s Kohler tub. Cabinetry in a lacquered automotive paint finish over hardwood houses etched-glass sinks that are mounted above the counter.
the terrace’s custom-designed bistro table with a Juperana granite top is heavy enough to withstand Florida’s summer storms and high enough to take in the palm beach views.

In the living room, natural materials abound with raffia, wicker and marble. The cabinetry’s lit glass shelving separates this space from the family room, where polished stainless steel trims the sofas and repeats in the bases of the cocktail table and an occasional table finished in natural unpolished travertine. Steps away in the dining area, floor-to-ceiling windows offer a breathtaking view of Palm Beach and the famed Breakers hotel. Due to the openness of the windows, Groh chose a fabric for the chairs that was sun-resistant and also easy to maintain, and custom designed the table with a leather-wrapped and raised-glass top. Two blades of polished stainless steel form the base.

In the master bath, Groh and Smith accented the granite walls with the same lapis lazuli that trims the floors. Granite turns to plush carpeting in the master bedroom, where a faux-leather headboard echoes the hue of real leather found on the Charles Eames lounge chairs. Art flows throughout the room, including a steel sculpture by Zachary Zaus — a birthday gift from Groh to Smith. Outside, 675 square feet of terrace space offers panoramic views of Palm Beach. “The most delightful aspect of the home is the incredible views looking east to west with wraparound terraces for fabulous vistas from sunrise to sunset,” Groh says, who along with Smith created an understated yet classic home that very much matches the couple’s laid-back lifestyle.
