“I always advise my clients to buy for location — the structure can always be aesthetically improved,” states designer Allen Saunders. And in this case, his clients had done just that, purchasing this 5,000-square-foot residence in Delray Beach, Fla., for its enviable location in one of the area’s most exclusive country club communities.

Offering everything that the owners desired for a permanent residence, the single-story floor plan is open yet private, and its resort-like setting perfectly suits their active lifestyle. The only negative: a somewhat dated interior scheme that mirrored the Mediterranean-style facade. “The homeowners are a very discerning, cosmopolitan couple who envisioned something much lighter and more contemporary for the interior,” Saunders says of his clients, who allowed the designer and his team total creativity. “Their only direction was for something young and unexpected but still warm and inviting — a fresh, streamlined decor that served as a fitting background for their growing collection of works by contemporary artists.”

“We were looking for a signature piece that was glamorous yet not crystal,” designer Allen Saunders says of the nickel-plated chain Terzani chandelier in the dining room.

The dramatic decor unfolds from the foyer, where split-faced limestone columns cue the home’s signature palette — a monochromatic blend of neutral tones paired with lush, tactile finishes and splashes of vibrant color. Saunders’ design for the space is in homage to Frank Lloyd Wright, whose iconic use of strong horizontal elements to ground a space and lend comforting, human scale is echoed throughout the home. “Spaces that are very vertical have a tendency to feel uncomfortable without some bold, horizontal lines to relax and balance the look,” the designer says.

“One of the best things about this house is that with all its glamour and elegance, it’s still very lived in; not a showcase but a comfortable environment,” Saunders says.

To this end, Saunders replaced the original faux-keystone fireplace with a split-limestone surround capped with a mantel made of one solid slab of quartz. An eight-foot-long tufted ottoman clad in metallic-gold leather and a pair of lacquered palm-wood floor lamps crowned with wide, oversized lampshades underscore the horizontal theme. A custom area rug from Tai Ping defines the seating area, where two custom-designed sofas and a chair upholstered in soft, charcoal chenille with white back cushions covered in an Italian woven textile are grouped around a cocktail table with an acrylic base and Starfire glass top.

Of major importance are Saunders’ custom pieces of meticulously crafted woodwork. One of the best examples of his skillful millwork design appears in the dining room, which features wine storage housed behind a wall covered in aniline-dyed Tabu veneer framed in ebonized oak, also seen in this room’s shadow-box window that separates it from the foyer, as well as in the living room bar cabinetry and powder room. A grouping of eight acrylic chairs surrounds the rectangular table, another bold, horizontal element made from a three-inch-slab of sustainable fallen-timber walnut. The showstopping chandelier illuminates the space — a glistening jewel of four miles of nickel-plated chain.

“On this project, we were blessed with two exceptionally knowledgeable, very forward-thinking clients,” Saunders says. “They allowed us to create something that was completely fresh.”

A large, circular area rug defines the family room and references the shape of the adjoining breakfast area, where an Eero Saarinen-designed pedestal table sets a mid-century modernist theme that is emphasized by the family room’s whimsical, Calder-esque mobile light fixture. The room’s organic palette incorporates bright grass-green accents in reference to the golf course view found outside.

The home’s horizontal theme extends to the restful master bedroom with striped draperies and clean-lined furnishings. The focal point of the room is a Christian Liaigre canopy bed custom finished in white lacquer and espresso oak that sits in a recessed wall painted a deep café con leche shade to add depth and dimension.

A successful design often involves an innate ability to envision a space as a clean slate and requires creativity on all parts of the design team and homeowners alike. “For us, it’s all about the team effort,” Saunders says, “working hand in hand with the client to be able to implement their desires in a way that truly captivates their lifestyle and needs.”
