Capturing the charm of a Neoclassical country manor, this 10,000-square-foot stately manse situated lakeside in the exclusive Jupiter, Fla., golf and country club community of The Bear’s Club blends the nuances of Europe with the comfort of the tropics. Inspired by the classics, architect Randall Stofft designed an elegant exterior with a soft bisque patina, balconies and a portico that projects a warm European presence — a prelude to the inviting interiors.

Inside an entrance structured with strong architectural elements, interior designer Judy Howard created an interior scheme in keeping with the exterior. “The sharing of ideas between architect, designer and client led to a creation that reclaims the elegance of centuries past fashioned with a comfortable current twist,” Howard says. “And this couple is every bit as warm and inviting as their home … each space with its own story.”

Private and shared spaces are appropriately staged with the transitions created by the flooring, furnishings and architectural detail. “We are the closest of friends,” Howard says of this couple, who also has houses in Manhattan and the Hamptons. “I have decorated eight homes for them, but we had the most fun flying to Los Angeles and New York to shop for furnishings and accessories for this home. Born and raised in Europe, the wife brings a certain openness — a European attitude if you will — to the plate that is very refreshing.”

Through a grand two-story entry, limestone leads into the living room, where the light walls and white ceiling frame an ecru setting embellished with burnished gold, pale green and soft rose tones found in the accent pillows and area rug. Here, a custom fireplace designed of carved marble topped by an antique Swedish mirror is the pivotal point to the library just beyond a double door entry. And all the imaginations of what an Old World library should be are manifested in this room.

The European theme carries into the dining room, where the couple’s antique Baccarat chandelier and a silver tea pot (made for Queen Victoria) centers a custom-designed Gregorious Pineo dining table made of Honduras mahogany. Touches of gold enhance the mood, where E.G. Cody chairs wrapped in an elegant Old World Weavers print from Brunchswig & Fils provide seating for up to 12 guests.

In a mix of styles, the breakfast area presents a juxtaposition of clean and rustic. A quaint custom banquette shapes the space with fresh fabrics, while an oval, iron chandelier by Formations finishes the look.

“The wife loves color and she’s not afraid to use it,” interior designer Judy Howard says. “Her penchant for bold and beautiful fabrics reveals itself here.”

Just beyond, a mélange of textures, prints and patterns dresses the Edward Ferrell sofa from Nessen and the Joubert bergères from Jerry Pair in the family room. “The wife loves color and she’s not afraid to use it,” Howard says. “Her penchant for bold and beautiful fabrics reveals itself here.”

Outside, the loggia fronts an infinity-edge pool with world-class fairways and pristine lakes beyond. “Though the scale of the house is quite dramatic,” the designer says, “the home itself is very livable.” That’s what you get when you combine the owner’s European flair, wonderful shopping sprees and Howard’s design expertise — a fitting Euro-traditional interior that is at once cozy and elegant. “It is so warm and inviting … whether you’re alone, throwing a large party or entertaining a small gathering of your closest friends, it just works,” Howard says. “And that’s the sign of a fabulous home.”
