”ONCE these CLIENTS made the decision to move from their home closer inland to an oceanfront property, our odyssey began in earnest,” interior designer Jennifer Garrigues says. A gregarious, extroverted British expatriate who counts this family-oriented couple among her long-standing clients, the designer contacted architect Rustem Kupi to design a house in North Palm Beach that takes in the sparkling ocean view.

Built on a narrow strip of land, Kupi designed this sprawling, 10,000-square-foot, tropical British Colonial house that Garrigues filled with furnishings and fabrics that exude Caribbean and Asian influences. “As a six-month winter residence and weekend getaway, we aimed for a relaxed, beckoning environment for their family and friends,” the designer says. “My clients and I are frequent travelers who adore exotic, romantic places and have a mutual love of color.” While adhering to the British Colonial style with tropical and Far Eastern touches, Garrigues fits in several unifying elements for an unfettered yet cohesive look.

Staying within a palette of coral, yellow and greens for floral, stripes and woven patterns, Garrigues uses white enamel for doors, baseboards, borders and architectural structures. Brazilian walnut wood floors add warmth and offset the Turkish and Indian rugs scattered throughout. And to define outdoor spaces around the three loggias, as well as those standing tall on the second-floor terrace, Kupi installed Tuscan columns on bases — a style distinctly attributed to British Colonial architecture.

Keeping many of the couple’s own furnishings, Garrigues, a world traveler, tapped into her own considerable collection of artifacts gathered over the years for accents, and drew upon her resources in India, the Far East and Morocco to find coveted relics. One standout from India, a carved temple door encased in stone, a gateway to the pool and beyond, is situated opposite a motor court that divides living quarters that face east to the ocean and the pool area — a relaxing, space, where loggias are used for entertaining small groups and dining al fresco.

Entering through mahogany doors and just past four Indonesian hand-carved pillars purchased in Bali — a complement to the outdoor Tuscan columns — sits the grand salon, a comfortable living room and a hallmark for the mix of English, Indonesian and Chinese furnishings with an Indian velvet daybed and a Chinese hand-carved table. An orchid-print fabric dominates the busy space that represents several design motifs. To diffuse the eye, Garrigues highlights sections using several styles of lighting from table lamps and wall sconces, to a glass bowl drop fixture and recessed lights in a coffered ceiling.

Nearby, English accents and Asian elements decorate the light-filled dining room. Late 19th-century neoclassical-style chairs upholstered in a floral and stripe, and a matching period, smoky-crystal glass chandelier are juxtaposed against a Chinese wicker table and two symmetrically placed Asian pedestals on either side of the floor-to-ceiling windows. And in true British Colonial form, a white enamel swing door topped with a solid transom leads the way through an oversized pantry to the picturesque kitchen beyond.

“Gathering places for friends and family are essential to this couple,” Garrigues says. In the kitchen, counter stools and teakwood benches seat guests comfortably as they engage in casual conversation, while just outside on the waterfront loggia, others gather hearthside around the striking bluestone table for cocktails and light dining amidst the ebb and flow of the ocean’s waves.

Step up the central gallery stairway to the wide-open and cozy master bedroom. “Informality is encouraged,” the designer says, “so we covered the ottoman in a Brunschwig & Fils cotton tapestry, allowing for a leg up on a night for TV viewing."

By day, amber drapes filter incoming light, while the trellis over the extended terrace cuts sunlight and allows year-round enjoyment. “When the house was complete, my clients threw a party for all those involved,” Garrigues says. “And the excitement continues to this day as their home evolves with every season.”
