Of course it's easier for a local designer to fashion a residence when he or she can see a home on a daily basis, getting to know its owners and surroundings, and interpreting its needs with a native familiarity. But what's harder still is when the designer has to develop its scheme from afar. Canadian designer John David Edison created a clean-lined and contemporary design for the cover story's 7,200-square-foot vacation retreat located near John's Island, Fla. Working closely with the owners, who are also from Canada, the resulting style is a classic Florida setting with strong architectural details and powerful bursts of color. Interior designer Jenny Carter had it a little bit easier, only having to drive the few hours from her Bonita Springs, Fla., office to Miami to design a 6,000-square-foot condominium that combines two units in one. Fashioning an urban beach chic theme for owners she has known for over a decade, Carter devised a fun, family environment for this stylish oceanfront vacation home designed for the ultimate in comfort and enjoyment. Possibly traveling the farthest, interior designer Eloise Kubli journeyed 3,200 miles to create a classically European approach for a 30,000-square-foot grand manse. Using traditional fabrics and ornate craftsmanship, with most of the pieces fabricated or purchased in Florida and shipped directly to the site, Kubli shaped a warm family environment with European influences that is majestic and dramatic yet controlled. And so, the home's in this issue prove that no matter how close or far away a designer may be, the result is still the same — stylish and stunning residences that suit the owners, and their surroundings,
to perfection.
