athematically, two plus two equals four, but not when you combine two penthouses in a South Florida condominium with two penthouses directly below. That equation adds up to one spectacular residence — the result of a three-year undertaking by architect Shane Ames and designers Steven M. Hefner and Joseph C. Fava.

Owners Sally Bosch Osherow and Shepard D. Osherow, who are both retired from their respective professions, had been searching for a unique condominium with panoramic views. Sally is the former chairwoman of Bosch Trucking Co., Inc. in Peoria, Ill., and Shepard is the former president and COO of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Inc. in New York City.

The couple found the perfect building one Saturday morning. "We were the first buyers to arrive and preview the preconstruction plans," Sally recalls. "We said, 'OK, we'll take the two top floors.'"

But there was one caveat: "The building was not designed to put apartments together because of the stairwells and elevator core," Ames explains. "It was necessary to work closely with the engineers to redesign certain elements in order to accommodate the project."

After the structure was re-engineered, Ames, Hefner and Fava focused on creating a fluid, two-story residence with breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. continued...
