"The atrium is the heart and soul of this home," Swinney says. "It dominates the interior in a totally favorable way that allows for great classical symmetry and lends a sense of Grecian order and balance." Florida artist Renee Headings sculpted the bronze birdbath fountain.

A MAJESTIC MANOR COMMANDS ATTENTION WITH ITS CLASSIC ARCHITECTURE

But it is the towering, three-story atrium with its fully retractable roof that sets this home apart. "Here, you have an essentially Italian Renaissance feature capped with a technological marvel," Prelogar says. "Hoyt was a real visionary to have conceived of such a feature at that time."

Upstairs, the guest suite affords privacy for family and friends. "We wanted the feel of an elegant hotel suite," Swinney says. Striped silk on the walls helps soundproof the space.

Earthy greens and warm woods distinguish the billiard room. "Here, you can really see the influence of Nelson's background as a lumber executive," Swinney says. "The crown molding, wainscoting, cornices and trim are as they were in 1915."

A subdued palette imparts a soothing ambiance in the second-floor master suite, where a canopy bed lavishly draped in cream and mocha silk is the centerpiece.

"This area was originally two separate master bedrooms, each with their own baths," Prelogar explains. "We completely renovated the south end to create one large master suite and bath."

In the master bath, French wall covering in a delicate floral-and-fountain pattern blends with the creamy-colored cabinetry and decorative molding.

"This house is an important architectural milestone that will outlive us all," the owners say. "We get numerous requests to host events, and we're happy to oblige. Because of its history, we feel the home belongs to the community and we are just the temporary curators." FD
