Bar
Cassina's leather chairs surround the table in the dining area. Mary Ann Irwin-Pope's "Southern Highways I and III" hang to the left of the doorway, and her husband Richard's piece, "Southern Detour, " brightens the wall to the right.

STRIKING SYMMETRY
Brett Cohen, International Creative Designs

...from previous page
Through the doorway is the bar area, where a mosaic-tiled mirror hangs above an alder-wood bar topped with absolute black granite. Pendants, colored in a hue similar to the frame around the mirror, suspend from the ceiling.

The same materials reappear in the gourmet kitchen — the motivating force behind the owners' serendipitous meeting with Cohen. Alder-wood cabinetry, absolute black granite countertops and cobalt blue, mosaic tile backsplashes form the basis of Cohen's sleek design. Stainless-steel appliances and halogen pinlights above the cabinetry underscore its ultramodern look. An island with a 10-foot-long, absolute black granite top and stainless-steel legs functions as a work area at one end and as a breakfast bar at the other.

In keeping with the home's minimal theme, the master bedroom contains a carefully edited selection of furnishings. The bed, sporting a woven-mesh headboard, rests low to the floor on a classic European-style upholstered frame. On the adjacent wall, a floating black shelf displays art and accessories. Underfoot, gray sisal carpet softens the room's pristine palette.

With Cohen's input, the owner has achieved the perfect balance of modern style and effortless comfort. FD
