ABOVE: In the dining area, white walls provide the backdrop for “Grey Day,”
a serigraph by Alex Katz. “Inverness,” an etching by Richard Serra, hangs
to the right.
They opted for the best of both worlds: buy the apartment in L’Ambiance and hire Zack to renovate the interior to their taste. “When the Pastors contacted me, they knew exactly what they wanted — a simple, understated look,” Zack says.
Recognizing the apartment’s “good bones,”
Zack removed existing walls, custom cabinetry
and textured surfaces. “Once it was opened up, the living area became a large rectangular space,” In the den, Christian Liaigre’s occasional table rests next to the lounge chair.
“I love the simplicity of the block of raw
wood. The natural splits give it such

personality,” designer Toby Zack says.
Zack says. “I love to float furniture away from the walls and create pathways in a room. With everything removed, I could do that.”
Juxtaposing dark exotic wood pieces with neutral walls in the private elevator entry, Zack carries the look into the living area. Here, an oversized wenge-wood cocktail table and a mocha-colored sisal area rug draw together two pairs of club chairs and a sofa, all wrapped in off-white leather with linen cushions. “Toby selected the furniture and scaled it to fit the room perfectly,” Irwin says.
