Known for their striking designs, forward-thinking concepts and penchant for the avant-garde, Italian designers consistently set the standard for creativity and innovation in the world of design.
To celebrate Italian contemporary design in America, the Italian Trade Commission in cooperation with the Associations of Italian Manufacturers presented “Luxury in Living — Italian Designers For Italian Industries.” DACRA, the developer of the Miami Design District, supported the show, which was held at the Loft Building from Nov. 30, 2004 to Jan. 12, 2005.
The exhibit showcased the finest Italian designs — both old and new — from more than 90 leading Italian manufacturers, representing 80 designers.
More than 150 striking works were on view by legendary names and emerging talent, including Donatella Versace, Giorgio Armani, Mario Bellini and Ettore Sottsass, as well as Fabio Novembre, Matteo Thun and Stefano Giovannoni.
The reinterpretation of “luxury” was the theme of the exhibit. No longer defined by mere aesthetic or dollar value — “luxury in living” today means looking beyond the surface at such issues as ethical production practices and the environmental impact of design.
Curator Carlo Ducci, editor in chief of the Italian magazines Vogue Italia and Casa Vogue, chose the furnishings for the exhibit based on these new standards of luxury as well as the tried and true, including creativity, innovation, beauty and above all, functionality.
Everything from furniture, lighting, silverware and fixtures to ceramic tiles and other home furnishings captured the essence of sumptuous style.
The show is a component of “Italia-Life in Style,” an ongoing effort by the Italian government and private industry to celebrate Italian design, fashion and cinema.
After its stop in Miami, the exhibit travels to London and is slated to continue to other cities in the United States. Thus, people from around the world get a chance to see, touch and feel the best Italian products on the home furnishings market today.
