For as long as designers have been designing, they have collaborated
with art and antique dealers on projects for their
discerning clientele. “Antique dealers are generally my first
stop on any design project because one wonderful piece of furniture
or art can drive an entire room,” says Robert Southern, one
of six designers invited to create room vignettes at this year’s
Palm Beach! America’s International Fine Art & Antique Fair.
Show organizers recognized this collaborative effort by affording
each designer approximately 200 square feet to transform into a stunning
room setting. Art and antiques from more than 90 dealers at the fair
were used to decorate each space.
In addition to Southern, four other New York-based designers were
invited, including John Barman, Geoffrey Bradfield, Richard Mishaan
and Juan Montoya, as well as Palm Beach-based designer Scott Snyder.
Barman and Palm Beach-based associate designer Chad Hoeft composed
a music room with furniture and art from Barry Friedman, Ltd. Bronze
pieces by French sculptor and furniture designer Ingrid Donat were
placed on a striking area rug by Federica Tondato, whose aubergine
hue inspired the wall color. Nearby, a 1930s-era piano by Poul Henningsen
from Maximiliaan’s House of Grand Pianos in New York reminded
one of the room’s purpose.
Southern’s goal when designing his bedroom vignette was “to
create a room that was both light and airy with a quiet formality
that seemed appropriate for the Palm Beach area,” he says. “It
has always been my belief that the most successfully designed rooms
combine comfort with a sophisticated palette of art and furniture.”
Kentshire Galleries provided the bed, antiques, art and accessories.
Valerio Antiques-Art Deco’s dining suite was the focus of Mishaan’s
glamorous dining room, where a muted backdrop allowed the furnishings
to shine. Artwork from Berry-Hill Galleries added a modern touch.
Colorful, bold, contemporary — these rooms captured the individual
styles of those who designed them.
