The defining elements of great design are luxury, balance, light,
and a sense of being at one with the natural and organic world,”
designer Kelly Hoppen says. Spoken like a true Zen master, Hoppen’s
words speak to her trademark style — a sensuous mix of Eastern
mysticism and Western modernism.
“The concept of fusing Eastern and Western influences came to
me when I got my ‘design feet’ at age 16,” the London-based
designer says.
Known for her pure aesthetic — incorporating subtle nuances
of color, texture and meaning — Hoppen often bases her designs
on grids to achieve “perfect symmetry.” Hence, words like
simplicity and serenity come to mind when looking at her work.
Part of the secret to her success, she feels, is that her work “comes
from the heart” and that she has “an intuitive approach”
to design. “Design is really about how you feel in a room,”
she says.
A self-taught designer, Hoppen began her career 25 years ago when
she left boarding school to decorate a family friend’s London
