| We kick off this issue
of Florida Design with a brand-new look — and
award-winning projects from the 5th annual “Night
of the Stars.” This gala awards ceremony, sponsored
by the state’s design organizations, was held
at the Design Center of the Americas to honor Florida’s
talented design professionals. In conjunction with
this event, DCOTA sponsored its own awards program,
called the “DCOTA Rising Star Awards.”
As a Platinum sponsor, Florida Design was on hand
to present an award and extend its congratulations
to all of the winners. One of the highlights of the
evening, however, was being in the presence of Tony
Award-winning dancer, singer, choreographer Tommy
Tune, who exhibited his artwork prior to the ceremony
and signed lithographs at the end of the evening.
Several days after the event, I had an opportunity
to speak with Tune, who divides his time between his
South Beach studio and New York apartment. For someone
of his stature and prominence, he is one of the most
down-to-earth individuals I’ve ever interviewed.
We also profile Alexa Hampton, daughter of the late
legendary designer Mark Hampton. Alexa, who heads
her father’s namesake design firm, recently
created “The Alexa Hampton Collection”
for Hickory Chair, which the company introduced at
the spring High Point market.
And speaking of High Point, we’ve got some new
products for you to check out. They range from contemporary
to casual and everything in between. And for the first
time, we bring you the latest innovations from the
Kitchen/Bath Industry Show held in Las Vegas.
From the departments to the features, this issue is
full of surprises.
