After many years of photographing South Florida residences by some of the country’s top interior designers, Carmel Brantley knows one thing for certain when it comes to high-profile shoots: “Mother Nature always runs the show, and you must be prepared for whatever she throws your way,” she says. “So many of my assignments have taken place during storms with people huddled in a corner as the lights flicker, but the show must go on.”
That friendly, can-do attitude has helped Brantley enter the worlds of tastemakers like Aerin Lauder, Alessandra Branca, Miles Redd, and Amanda Lindroth, just a few of the design professionals whose lauded interiors are featured in Tropical Living, the photographer’s first monograph. In the Vendome Press volume, on shelves this fall, Brantley shares the colorful images that so vividly showcase the ingenuity and whimsicality that designers bring to interiors and gardens in warm climates like that of South Florida.
“When the publisher suggested I do this, I delved into my files and quickly realized there was a definite tropical theme in many of the projects I have photographed, so it was a natural fit,” says Brantley. “I am fortunate to work with designers, architects, and artists who are so tropically talented.”
The 224-page book includes a foreword by Lauder, text from various leading designers, 180 colorful illustrations of interiors and outdoor spaces, and even tips on achieving a tropical look at home.
“Being able to collaborate with such creative individuals is one of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer, and I think this book captures that,” says Brantley. “Understanding the individual style of a designer is paramount in achieving a composition that best expresses their vision and tells the story of the project.”
