Designer James Farmer is eager and prepared for his guest speaker role at Naples Tables 2027

One of the winter season’s most animated gatherings, the 2027 Naples Tables luncheon (February 25) will gather the region’s top design professionals and most dedicated philanthropists for an animated afternoon of fundraising and visual splendor among the tablescapes that will be created for the occasion. Taking all this in will be James Farmer, the renowned interior designer and author who has been tapped as this year’s guest speaker.

Tell us: What is your history with Naples Tables?

Before the 2019 event, when I was first asked to be the guest speaker, I hadn’t heard of it, but now I’m well aware of the organizer, The League Club, and its philanthropic efforts in the region, so I am thrilled they’ve asked me back.

Are you familiar with Naples?

My dear friend Jett Thompson has had me at her shop for book signings over the years, so I’ve come to love the city and its wonderful people.

This year’s luncheon marks the 40th anniversary of The League Club, so the event is bound to be larger than ever. Excited or nervous?

Neither. More honored than ever that I get to be the speaker for such a momentous occasion.

You’ve done the guest speaker gig before. What’s the trick to getting people to listen and pay attention?

My approach is to engage the crowd both educationally and emotionally. They want to learn, and they want to laugh… and occasionally they want to shed some happy tears.

As you know, the event features a competition of tablescapes. In your opinion, what makes a memorable one?

I’ve always said that if you want to make straight A’s on your tablescape report card, you need the three F’s: fruit, flowers, and foliage!

What are your musts for a properly set table?

You can’t just set for a show and forget the meal. Know what you’re serving and what you need to be hospitable to others.

And what are your don’ts?

I don’t like scented candles anywhere near my table.

What else can we expect from you in 2027?

I’ll be working on design projects from Florida to Martha’s Vineyard, and on a new interior design book. 2027 is going to be a great year, and I’m thrilled to be kicking it off in Naples.
